I Love Watercolor ~ The Beauty of Transparency 2008

This is a juried transparent watercolor exhibit designed to enhance the creativity of the entering artists. To be eligible, only TRANSPARENT watercolor applied in a transparent manner on a single sheet of untreated 100% rag or cotton paper, free of pigment and/or embedded materials except the use of pencil planning marks are acceptable. Works must be original, i.e., not of class instruction, not critiqued and changed, not a copy of another artist's work, or a copy of any photo not taken by the artist. Work must have been completed within the last three years.

Again, it was a pleasure and challenge to judge this year's Starving Artist Competition and Exhibit. Having two judges and two different perspectives proved to be insightful but difficult. The top awards were mutually agreed upon from the start. Then compromises occurred and Danielle chose her favorites and I chose mine. Had I juried the show alone. selections would have been quite different. After the fact. certain pieces made a strong impression in my mind. A photograph of a boats hull, a colorful painting of Croton leaves, a watercolor of coconuts, a pastel of a basket of apples, and even a glass encrusted teapot stood out for me and deserve merit. And of course I am always drawn to previous award winners' work. I must say the quality level of this show as a whole by far surpassed previous years. One word of advice ... don't enter giclees for competition! An original would have been awarded. Congratulations to all of the artists.
